In Oklahoma Turnips can be planted between February 15th and March 10th. Radishes can be planted between March 1st to April 15th. This means the first week of March is a great time to get both in the ground!

Turnips need to be planted 1/2 inch deep and 3 inches apart with 1 1/2 feet between rows.

Radishes need to be planted 1/2 inch deep and 1 inch apart with 1 foot between rows.

It’s easy to dig shallow trenches and spread the seeds. If you sprinkle them too closely together you will have to thin them later. Cut off the tops of the extras when they are still small so the remaining plants are the correct distance apart. You can eat the tops in a salad.

Radishes are ready to harvest in 25 to 40 days. Turnips are ready to harvest in 50 to 60 days.

To harvest, loosen the soil with a garden fork, being careful not to stab the roots, and pull out the whole plant. Leave the greens on to make them last longer. Soak and wash them in cold water twice, then refrigerate.

Radishes are best thinly sliced and eaten raw in a salad, or pickled. Turnips are good roasted or boiled in a soup like you would use a potato. Turnip greens are delicious sautéed like collard greens or kale.
