Keeping the garden watered in the hot summer months can be difficult. Installing a drip irrigation system can save both time and water. Some areas might make more sense to water by hand though, like squash mounds and trees where you don’t want to water the surrounding grass.
Be sure to soak the ground one inch deep. After you water an area, wait one minute, and then poke your finger in the soil. If it’s only wet on the surface, you need to water more. How long it takes to water depends on how dry your soil was to begin with and how good your soil is.
A drip irrigation system under a thick layer of mulch is the best way to keep your soil moist. If you’ve just seeded an area, water every day to keep the surface wet until the sprouts come up and you can start mulching around them. Keep adding more mulch. My favorite source of mulch is dried weeds (without bermuda grass and seed heads).
